If your company employs drivers or couriers, it’s important to
ensure that their experience with you is enjoyable and productive −
both for your business and for the individual.
Not only is this the
moral duty of an employer, but it will also ensure that you
get the best results and that staff turnover is always low. In
this article, we look at a few of the ways in which you can maintain
high job satisfaction and morale for all drivers employed by your
company. |

Invest in Their Safety
Professional driving
jobs often require employees to work unsocial
hours - sitting behind the wheel for long periods of time or
transporting goods at night. You must make sure that you are
adhering to all official regulations when setting up rotas and
shifts for your drivers, and that they have suitable periods off
work. You should also invest in equipment that will help them to
stay safe at all times. Fleet management services can help you a
great deal here. Platforms of this kind can give you access to
resources such as up to the minute fleet dash cams for video-based
safety, offering real-time incident detection and preventative
in-cab
coaching.
Request Feedback (and Act on It)
Instead of pre-empting
what will make your staff members happy − just ask them. Give
them regular opportunities to
provide feedback and
make suggestions.
This will increase their sense of ownership within the role and will
prevent them from ever feeling ignored. It’s important that you act
on the requests and ideas that you receive − either by implementing
suggestions that are sensible and achievable, explaining what needs
to be done in order to make the requested changes or detailing why
there are certain things that can’t be undertaken right now. If you
are unable to make particular changes based on feedback, make sure
your employees know that you will take steps to implement something
that is at least similar.
Arrange Socials
Driving can be a very isolating job. While other employees are able
to enjoy the camaraderie that comes with working in a team,
couriers, delivery drivers and transport professionals are likely to
spend many long hours alone, which can result in boredom and low
mood. To counter this, it’s a good idea to arrange at least one team
meeting per week just to check in with everyone. You could also set
up various events at which drivers can socialize outside of work.

Keep Goals Achievable and Engaging
Many employers of drivers set targets to
maintain high standards of performance. However, if these goals
are too easy, your staff may get bored or even feel condescended to.
Too hard, and they’ll become stressed and feel as though your
demands are too high. Try to find a happy medium to ensure that your
employees continue to enjoy the challenges you set. If you are
unsure of how they feel about their targets − just ask them.
